| The exact domain name is actually domainname.ca. The other part, the http://www. , is actually part of a URL (Uniform Ressource Locator). A URL is an internet address used to locate a specific server or file on the internet. The difference is that a domain name can only be a name and an extension (domainname.com, .com being the extension), while a URL can point to a specific file, like www.domainname.com/folder/file.htm. | |||

| What are the rules and regulations if I want to transfer a domain name from Network Solutions to ZiD? | |||
| The only rule is that you have to be the owner of the domain name. If you wish to transfer the domain name from Network Solutions, simply advise us. We will start the process. You will then receive an email from Bulk Register (which is our Registration partner in the US), asking you to confirm that you want to transfer your domain to them. Once you have confirmed that you agree to the transfer, the restof the process is done automatically. You should receive an email from Network Solutions once the tranfser is accepted by them.. After that, you will be able to contact ZiD instead of Network Solutions. Note that you can only transfer domain names from Network Solutions to another registar. At the present time, no other .com registar may transfer a domain to another. | |||

| What is a DNS? | |||
| A DNS (Domain Name
Server) is a server that receives the request when someone types in the
corresponding domain, and sends the information to the browser. A DNS is
made out of two things: a NAME and an IP. a NAME resembles something like
"GOLD1.ZID.COM" or "DNS2.ZID.COM", and an IP is a series
of numbers that look like "255.255.255.255".
If you compare your domain name to a toll-free phone number, then you could compare Internic or CIRA (where the DNS are stored) to the phone company routing central, and the DNS information as the physical wire between the central and your house. |

| How are DNS resolved at CIRA? Do I really need 2 servers and 2 IPs? | |||
| It all depends. If
your DNS is on any domain other than yours (for example if your domain is
mydomain.ca and your DNS are nsX.myhosting.ca), the IP address is not needed,
and not used. But if your DNS resides at the same address as your domain
name (for example your domain is mydomain.ca and your DNS are nsX.mydomain.ca),
then the IP is required, and verified when a user types in
your domain. But you definately need at least 2 DNS, whatever they are and wherever they reside. You can add more, but the minimum is 2. If you do not have your own DNS at the time of registration of your domain name, ZiD.com provides free domain parking until your website or DNS is ready. |

| Forwarding is the action
of redirecting a visitor FROM a domain name TO a standard URL (internet
address) Example: if someone types in www.yourdomain.com, he would be redirected to http://www.yourisp.net/~username/file.htm |

| How do I figure out if I need Forwarding or if I can use DNS services? | |||
| It all depends on your hosting provider. Contact your hosting administrator, and ask him if you can use a domain name on your hosting plan. If you can, ask him the DNS and IP information, and modify it so it properly points to your hosting. If you can't, you'll have to use the alternate solution to point to your page from your domain name. That solution is Forwarding. | |||
| How much does it cost to use DNS? | |||
| The actualy USE of a DNS is free (it's part of buying a domain name!). The problem is HAVING the actual DNS, and configuring them properly. If you buy your domain here at ZiD.com, you can go to www.zid.com, click on Domain Name, then go in the Modifications section to change that information yourself. | |||

| How much does forwarding cost? | |||

| If DNS services are free, but redirection costs $10, why choose the second option? | |||
| Because if your hosting cannot permit the use of DNS, you cannot configure this in any way. When a web server is not configured for multiple DNS services, any domain pointing to their DNS will just show their front page. Furthermore, if your hosting uses long URLs (e.g. someserver.somehosting.com/somearea/subarea/0000/), it is better to have a short domain instead. | |||
